Al and Joe are back again. Former Vice President Al Gore will speak on the last evening of the Denver Democratic Convention which is an important finale for the convention and a night that will carry the Democrats to the general election in November.
It will be a night for the history books as Barack Obama accepts the nomination of his party the Democrats that have been out of power for 8 long difficult years under George Bush. Obama will be the first African American to accept the nomination for the Presidency in history.
Although Al Gore would be an excellent, and progressive choice for Vice President in an Obama administration speculators think this is highly unlikely in this election. Gore has won the Pulizer Prize and a few Oscars for his movie ” Inconvenient Truth” and much praise for his efforts on controlling global warming and protecting the environment.
In 2000 Al Gore’s run for the Presidency including his pick for Vice President Joe Lieberman who has become an Indpendent candidate. Lieberman is coincidentally speaking at the Republican National Convention which is odd as both were Vice President Democratic picks in the past. Liberman’s speaking on behalf of the Republicans may not be received very well by either party. It speaks to how much of an Independent Lieberman really is playing up to the Republican voters and how will he be received in that venue.
At least we will not be listening to Charlton Heston waving a rifle in the air, but we will be enjoying a farewell to outgoing George W. Bush, and Dick Cheney.
Both parties are floating names to get reactions and create smoke screens for the actual Veep pick such as Lieberman’s name is being highlighted to make Tom Ridge the Pennsylvania governor seem more appealing in contrast. Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty also oppose abortion rights but they may not be palatably to McCain. It is all a guessing game trying to relate speakers at the conventions to the actual pick for both parties.
In reality the Vice President pick is not all that important as they have very little power unless you are Dick Cheney with a rifle. The Vice President pick does however give some indication of what type of administration either an Obama or a McCain administration’s policies.
