July 18 2010 BP Oil Spill Cap holding back the leak so far -so good. The cap is actually for two days is now holding off spilling any more oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The BP Oil spill cap was gingerly set in place with pressure testing which continues throughout the process. Scientists, the government and BP Oil all clashed over taking the cap off again and allow the oil to continue spilling again.
As the tests have proceeded caution is the word on whether this cap will hold when all others failed up to two days ago which is 83 days of a constant pollution of the Gulf by the BP explosion on the Horizon rig back on April 20, 2010. A moratorium on oil drilling also is dragging on through the courts with the federal government holding its own on stopping all oil production until the leak and BP explosion is investigated to find the cause. This makes good sense since if this is not discovered another leak could happen on other BP wells that did not follow safe practices on the initial drilling procedures.
No one is holding their breathe however since the explosion that caused the rig to collapse, burn and sink into the sea is still in a precarious state of flux. The pipes leading into the ocean floor could be weakened by the blast and seismic monitors are testing any leaks consistently until the relief wells can take over.
However as shown in the BP Oil Spill Cam the oil gushing out of the well pipe has stopped. A welcomed relief to the residents of the gulf and the fisherman who have not caught fish for over three months.
