Argentina Passes Gay Marriage Law

July 17, 2010 2:26 p.m.  Argentina passes Gay Marriage law in their Senate which authorizes same sex marriage  and becomes the first of the South American countries to legalize gay marriages.

The vote was a clear majority of 33 to 27 and the measure passed by the administration of President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchener who was at war with the Catholic Church of Argentina.  Clearly President Cristina won the battle against Church leaders who conducted large protests against the law allowing gays to marry in Argentina.

The President stated ” “They are portraying this as a religious moral issue and as a threat to ‘the natural order,’ when what we are really doing is looking at a reality that is already there,” the president said from Beijing. “It would be a terrible distortion of democracy if they denied minorities their rights.”

President Kirchner cited polls of over 70 percent of the population approved of gay marriage rights being made into law and granting the same rights as heterosexual couples and she clearly made history in gay rights around the world.  Many of those against the law stated that civil unions were enough for gay couples.

Pro-gay marriage proponents said that a civil union “doesn’t respect equality” and that only passing a legalized marriage law would give gays a marital right without having to go to court.
