The bomber terrorist of the Detroit flight crisis on December 25 the Christmas holiday as it was landing in Detroit from Amsterdam is a 23 year old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Umar stated to investigators that he obtained the bomb materials in Yeman, which is a growing al-Qaeda terrorist stronghold which is similar to and may have ties to the Pakistan al-Qaeda group. Umar also reported that he had contacted a radical cleric online and this is suspected to be Anwar al-Awlaki.
The Yeman government has been waging an assault on the group and had killed the two top leaders including the American born Awalaki who has been posting sermons on his website which has ingnited recent incidents of terrorism in the USA. Although Awalaki is reported to be dead his relatives claim he is still alive. Awalaki had communications with Major Nidal Hasan who shot 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas.
Meanwhile the Dutch police are searching for a possible accomplice -a tall, middle aged man who was seen at the Amsterdam airport prior to the plane leaving for Detroit. Authorities have had to explain why Umar who was reported by his parents to be planning terrorism and was on the watchlist by intelligence was allowed to board the plane in Amsterdam without cause or concern.
President Obama has ordered a full investigation and review of the watch list and terrorists on that list as well as stepped up airport security measures against further terrorist acts. Umar is the son of a wealthy banker and comes from an upper class background in Nigeria where most of the country is in poverty.
