All The President’s Vacations

How the former Presidents compare with President Obama’s vacation times, is quite surprising if you do the arithmetic.

It’s an election year and cheap shots abound on the political scene and the topic is about Presidential vacations and President’s do take and deserve vacations.

George Bush Took 77 Trips to Crawford, Texas Ranch

The latest turmoil involves the President’s wife Michelle and their two daughters who took a vacation in Spain in 2010. Still, because it is an election year the republicans are making an issue about the cost of the First Lady’s trip. But in comparison with other President’s the Obama’s have not taken the advantages than other Presidents chose.

Now Judicial Watch has filed a lawsuit to get Michelle Obama’s vacation records from the Air Force and republicans are looking for anything they can to fight Obama in the fall election.

Some Facts From Presidential Vacations of the Past:

1) Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan from LA Times, Issue Sept. 8, 1987

In 1987 President Reagan left for the West Coast for a 25 Day vacation.
President Reagan spent one whole year out of a 6 1/2 year term on vacation.

The bill for his one month long vacation $ 600,298.00 which was a lot of money 25 years ago.

The Reagan’s visited their ranch in the Santa Ynez Mountains of California three times a year costing taxpayers 8 million dollars per year.

When Reagan traveled he took an entourage that consisted of 24 Secret Service Agents, White House Chief of Staff Baker, National Security Adviser Carlucci, a dozen staff members, 24 hour communications personnel, a dozen drivers, some aides and Air Force One that cost $ 5,728.00 per hour.

Reagan’s Air Force One was also shadowed by another plain called the Dooms Day Plane, for a back up with additional costs of fuel and staff.

Quote: “the President (Reagan) has spent about one year of his 6 1/2 years in office vacationing in California. And those 356 days–the unofficial estimate of the White House transportation office–haven’t been cheap.

The White House, federal agency officials and many of the California business people who serve the presidential entourage cite security considerations in refusing to discuss the particulars and costs of the latest presidential R & R. But an unofficial and very conservative estimate based on knowledgeable sources puts the taxpayers’ share of the 25-day rest at $600,298–excluding such items as food and toiletries, which come out of the Reagans’ pockets.”  end quote

2) George Bush

Media Matters- Obama Should Model Bush’s Vacation Schedule

Quote:

“But getting back to her suggestion that following Bush’s example would save taxpayer money. President Bush took 149 trips to Camp David, 77 visits to his Crawford ranch, and 11 trips to his father’s Kennebunkport mansion.

Since Air Force One reportedly cost $56,800 per hour to operate in 2004 (which Bush used to get to Crawford), and the plane can travel up to 630 miles per hour, it cost at least $259,657 to get the 2,880 miles to Crawford and back, each time Bush went,  million dollars just for taking the plane on the Crawford trips alone.”

George Bush has 487 Days of Vacation a Whole Year off of Work

CBS News Quote: According to CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller, today’s trip marks Mr. Bush’s 149th visit to the presidential retreat. The planned three-day stay, during which the president is being joined by family and former and current aides, will bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days.

Secret Service Sent Home from Columbia for Misconduct

Secret Service Sent Home from Columbia For Misconduct

Cartagena, Columbia where the President of the United States is on a Latin American tour has been tainted by 12 Secret Service agents who allegedly took prostitutes to the same hotel where the President was to arrive for The Summit of the Americas. The scandal involves one or more of the agents who did not pay the prostitute(s)

The 12 agents who were assigned to protect the President were removed from their posts, sent home and quickly replaced.  Most of the Secret Service agents were also married and may have lost both their jobs and marriages and are under investigation. At no time was the President’s life in danger nor was he even in the country when the incident occurred.

Although, prostitution is legal in Columbia the misconduct paints a disturbing picture of the culture in the services provided by not only the Secret Service but last week’s fiasco with the GSA’s $ 836,000 party in Vegas footed by the taxpayers.

Homeland Security chief, Janet Napolitano has been briefed and so has the President.

The group of Secret Service agents and officers sent to Colombia ahead of President Barack Obama for his security, were relieved of duty and returned home amid allegations of misconduct that involved prostitution, according to two U.S. government sources familiar the investigation.
