FDA Approves BPA in Food Packaging
The US Food and Drug Administration removed a ban on BPA the chemical found in cans, plastic bottles, baby food containers, baby milk bottles that interferes with the endocrine gland in adults and children. The agency cites that there isn’t enough proof that BPA is harmful even for babies.
What does BPA Look Like:
BPA is found in the lining inside of cans that contain food, anything from Campbell Soup, Tomato Sauces, fruits, vegetables, meats anything sold in a can including beer, and soft drinks. BPA is that hard plastic you find sold at Wal-Mart and for babies formula bottles or drinking bottles.
What the FDA is saying here by allowing BPA is that the American consumer are on their own, the government is not going to protect the food packaging even though it causes cancer in favor for the plastic industry to make a profit from such a deadly chemical. It is par for the course for the FDA to side with corporate profits over public safety but this goes beyond the pale.
BPA is short for Bisphenol -A and it is in every conceivable packaging of food and drinks sold today.
The studies performed by the FDA declare that BPA is safe and they are seriously flawed in their findings.
While a host of other countries have banned the plastic for over five years, especially in baby bottles the USA remains one of the few countries where the plastic lobbyists have won this argument for corporate profits rather than public safety.
Side Effects of BPA
BPA has been proven in 130 studies to cause infertility, hyperactivity, breast cancer and depression.
BPA is implicated in cancer, obesity, thyroid problems, heart disease, neurological problems, fertility and children’s behavior issues.
While parents may think that sugary drinks are making their kids hyper it can be also the BPA in soft drink containers or plastic juice bottles. BPA becomes an estrogen type hormone and interferes with the normal body functioning even in a fetus. Especially vulnerable are young children, babies and adults of all ages.
The reason is that this chemical is in the lining of canned foods and bottles with liquid where the BPA leeches out and into the body. The simple act of eating a can of soup will raise the BPA levels of urine by 1000 Percent!
How Consumers Can Protect Themselves
Steps you can take to protect you and your family from BPA ingesting are by:
1) Not purchasing food sold in cans
2) Not purchasing drinks sold in cans.
3) Not purchasing plastic bottles for any liquid or foods.
4) Buying glass bottled drinks, foods, and baby formula bottles made of glass.
5) Buy fresh fruits, vegetables, not canned food.
Consumers will have to do all of this until the FDA comes to it’s senses or the top agency brass are fired.
Most likely the FDA ruled in favor of the plastic companies who have lost profits for five years while the FDA took its time to decide in their favor in the long run. The FDA sides with the corporations and not with public safety.
